The Virtual Campus

The Universidad del Rosario, Bogotá, has various campuses, so many students do not have a chance to visit the original, main campus in the center of the city built in 1653 . This virtual campus allows them to visit it and understand the university's heritage and historical treasures.

This campus area also has recreated a small town called Bojayá where a massacre took place in 2002. Students role play to re-live the massacre for an ethics course, and then describe their reactions. Their experience was compared to a control group which studied the massacre using only traditional text media.

Student avatars interacting with the founder of the university, Fray Cirstóbal, represented by a bot (at the left), who gives tours on command or from a menu to the important historical halls of the university - the Rector's Office, the Chapel, and others

The student selects a tour and follows the footsteps of the Founder. In this case, it is to the Chapel "La Bordadita" where the founder gives the student instructions for a scavenger hunt to find items of historical significance in the chapel.

Beginning of the tour to the Archives. The student follows the Founder bot and his disappearing footsteps. The student is then given instructions by the bot for a scavenger hunt in the Archives.

Role Playing - The Massacre at Bojayá

A rocket is launched into the town's church, killing citizens inside.

Inside the church, immediately after the explosion, with roof collapsed, fire and smoke, and dismembered bodies, blood spills. Those who play the role of guerrillas enter with rifles. The massacre continues.

Video documentaries about the massacre are viewed "in-world" and activated by student avatars by clicking on the screen.

Students prepare PowerPoints to share their experiences and discuss the role play and the massacre.
